Insulation is the most practical way to protect your home from winter conditions. Feel free to try these 7 extremely helpful tips:

1. Replace Wall Insulation

The only hearty material separating the interior walls of your home from the outside is wall insulation. Depending on how old your house is and what type of insulation was installed, your walls might be due for an upgrade. Cooler temperatures call for a higher quality of insulation because cheaper materials will be considerably less effective.

2. Cover Water Pipes

Walls aren’t the only part of your home that need insulation during the winter. Frozen water pipes are a major safety hazard. When frozen pipes burst, water gushes out and your home could potentially become a flood plain. Insulating your water pipes keep them from freezing and also helps them run more efficiently by retaining heat.

3. Seal Vents

Air leaks are a common concern amongst homeowners every winter. There’s nothing worse than feeling a cold draft that both gives your body a chill and raises your utility bills. Take a close look at your air vents around the house and double-check to see if they’re properly sealed. If not, apply some caulk with a smooth finish.

4. Door Snake

Brisk winter air can also infiltrate your home from underneath doors, turning tile and hardwood flooring into an icebox. The solution is pretty simple. All you need to do is find something to cover the crack between the door and the floor. We call this “snaking the door” and it really does work! Door snakes provide good temperature control and keep cold air out of your house.

5. Get Curtains

Homes tend to lose a lot of heat in the winter from windows. Modern windows were constructed with weatherstripping technology that holds in warm air, but older windows leak at a more rapid rate. Hanging heavy curtains over your windows, especially at night, will prevent warm air from escaping. You can always replace your old windows too with weather-stripped windows.

6. Protect Water Heater

Similar to how you can insulate your water pipes, applying the same strategy to your water heater is also a good idea. Hot water accounts for a large portion of your utility bills in the winter, so insulating the water heater goes a long way to making the whole system more efficient. The easiest way to insulate a water heater is to wrap it in a blanket. That’s it!

7. Consult Southwest Insulation

When it comes to insulating your home in lower temperatures, there are always improvements that can be made.
